Click on one to highlight it and see the alt code for it. Then from the popup window scroll the bottom for "private use area" and they'll usually be there. ![]() If you're in windows you can figure these codes out by doing start -> run -> charmap, click ok, find the font you want, go to "Group by" at the bottom and do "unicode subrange". Some of the cheaper fonts that don't use the opentype (.otf) file format will fake it by making the special ligatures and alternates accessible by typing alt codes. ![]() But other programs like flexi don't bother with it at all. I think the process is similar in indesign. The Emigre font library features more than 600 original typefaces, including Mrs Eaves. From 1984 until 2005 Emigre published the legendary Emigre magazine, a quarterly publication devoted to visual communication. If you do it in illustrator, you can get to any special letter by going to the type menu and finding "glyphs". Emigre Fonts is a digital type foundry and publisher of type specimens and artist books based in Berkeley, California. Like try typing it in photoshop, and I bet at least some of the letters change. The later adobe ones tend to substitute the prettier letters automatically, and to connect ligatures (two letters that can be drawn as one special character, like "tt") automatically. Some design programs handle this well and other ones don't handle it at all. Check out this page for some interesting info on how much work goes into making all those alternates: Opentype fonts have alternates for lots of characters, and you can access these characters by going to the glyphs pallette in your design program. It's just really unfortunate to look at and makes my eyes hurt (both literally and figuratively, y'all).Those special swirly letters are alternates of the regular letters. While this has nothing to do with font pairing, one thing I have to mention: please don't ever use ALL-CAPS with a glyph font.You can see how I did that in the first font combination illustrated below (although the second combination is exactly the opposite, but still works). When I do the above pairing, I often do the script font on "top", allowing it to kind of sit on the all-caps font.I also like to do all caps with one font and pair it with a script font in all lowercase, but that's just my own preference.Pair a script font with a print font (combine this with the thicker/skinny idea and you've got a good thing going on).Pair a thicker, heavier weighted-font with a skinny font.It would also be a little tough on the eyes. They're quite ornate in nature and would compete with one another. Try to avoid pairing two fonts with glyphs together.If you want to use them in a commercial manner, most of the font designers do provide options for licensing and commercial versions. This actually took a bit of digging, but I think you're going to love the outcome and all of these pretties. However, I went through and found 15 totally free (for personal use) fonts that incorporated all of the fancy, decorative glyphs into the main font characters. Usually with a glyphed font, the main font is free, but the characters with glyphs can cost extra. Today's free fonts with glyphs are a bit unique.
